The Wale x Nick Catchdubs Mixtape About Nothing is finally out! Grab it off zshare (part 1 and part 2) and bump it through the weekend and beyond. Here’s the tracklist and production credits, and here’s a link to buy physical copies packed with a limited-edition 10.Deep shirt.

This is the sequel to the 100 Miles And Running tape Wale and I put together last Summer, and if that was his 3 Ft High And Rising this one is definitely De La Soul Is Dead. Don’t let the Seinfeld theme fool you - it gets pretty dark and dense at points, and shows another side to one of the most interesting dudes making music right now.

What are you still doing here, go listen! Here’s a bonus blend of “The Crazy” left on the cutting room floor.

What’s In A Name

The new Wale mixtape is done (and dropping this Friday!), which got me thinking back to the first artist tape I ever made with Saul Williams, in the bygone summer of ‘05 when I was working in the same office as Saul’s (and at the time, MIA’s) manager.

Wasn’t crazy about each and every one of his originals, but there was a ton of clever shit going on underneath the robot rock, and dude was a mesmerizing live performer. After one particularly sweaty show the lightbulb went off to put his tracks over some clubbier beats. For the kids. Everyone was still amped off Piracy Funds Terrorism (the working title for the tape was even Poetry Funds Terrorism), I had fun putting it together on my own, and Saul loved the finished mixes.

Once it was completely finished, he decided to rename the tape Real Niggery. It sort of let the air out of the balloon as far as promo was concerned. Some people got it and really enjoyed it. Other people got it and completely misunderstood the concept (which on the musical side wasn’t really that deep). But at least we can now look back and say… first!

Here’s a zshare from the archives.

All the Fool’s Gold related SXSW stuff is up now on our blog. Photos (like the above snappy) videos (including my fave moment of the festival) and a dizzying assortment of press n links.

Shows in Ohio this weekend and Miami the next. Bam!

You Say It I Play It

Good Records is one of the finest vinyl emporiums in New York City, and I would say that even if I didn’t design their logo. They’ve stepped their online game up as of late with a bunch of downloadable mixes, and the newest one is a complete DJ Red Alert radio show from 1989. Shout out to tape archivist and supalawyer Hoody Allen, Esq!

The Lights Get Me Hype

Dunno about the rave part, shit sounds like Paramore with an 808. Pop punk lives in Ellenwood!

Half Dot Com Been Good To Me

Coming through with the jams time zShare forgot. Replaced a bunch of cassettes too (When Disaster Strikes! Incesticide!) and kinda feeling myself.

Reeboks With The Strap

I made this a month or two ago to play out (right around when Flo-Rida dethroned Britney as “most persistent/inappropriate request of the evening”) and here it is at 320 with extended intro and outro for the deejays: “Low” over one of my favorite house tracks from last year. MASH! It’s gonna be on a new mixtape coming out next month (Midnight Snack), but enjoy it now.

Atlanta Georgia

Two summers ago I visited Atlanta for the first time. Drove around in Will Welch’s Honda Accord with him and Michael Schmelling, got hamburgers and frosted oranges from the Varsity, and went to Killer Mike and Bubba Sparxxx’s houses.

The album Mike was recording at the time, Ghetto Extraordinary, finally came out this past Friday, on the internet. It’s great. Not sure what Bubba is up to at the moment - I think he’s on Koch - but here’s his “Pocket Fulla Midz” anyway, perhaps my favorite song about mid-grade drugs ever recorded.
